Breakthrough Like a Tiger

Prison to Praise

“What keeps the tiger in his cage?” asked the wise monk to his apprentice.

“The bars!” declared the apprentice.

The wise monk smiled at this answer – knowing how close it was to the truth and yet how far away it was from the breakthrough the younger man needed in his thinking.

“Almost,” he said. “It is the distance between the bars that keeps the tiger in his cage!”

Now it was the turn of both of them to smile as new opportunities unfolded.

There will always be barriers

Life, for the vast majority of people, is a journey with hazards! Whether it’s childhood illness, accidents, marital breakdown, failure at school, failure in business, failure in love, health issues with age, changes in the economy… enough already! There will always be barriers that have to be overcome. Breakthroughs are required to get to the next level of success and joy!

When we break through, we become stronger and develop more capacity

Is this is why so many computer games are about facing difficult resistance to get to the next level? It’s a challenge we can relate to.

The Tiger in the night

As I laid awake in the night, I thought about our quest for freedom. It’s universal. We all want it. What many of us may have forgotten is that we are prisoners to whatever has mastered us. We all have bars that need to have more distance put between them.

Those bars can represent something as dangerous as addiction, or they can be frames of mind (bars of mind) that no longer serve us as well as they once did. Our beliefs can liberate us, or they can limit us. When they limit us, they are bars that need to bend.

Athletes and Entrepreneurs

Athletes know all about these bars and the distance between. They are the limit that they hit when they run – often a literal distance. Next time, the distance increases, and so does the space between the bars. Capacity grows, expands, embraces new opportunity.

Entrepreneurs often speak, instead, of a ‘ceiling of complexity’. Whether ceilings or bars, we know what we need to do: go the distance then increase the distance… pushing through the resistance!

S-T-R-E-T-C-H-ing our capacity

Shall we head for a breakthrough today?

What could you and I do today to:

  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H our physical capacity? One more lap? 1000 more steps?
  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H our emotional capacity? Call someone with boldness? Make peace?
  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H our relationship capacity? Make a new friend?
  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H our intellectual capacity? Pick up that new book? What’s its title?
  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H our spiritual capacity? Adjust a belief that is no longer serving us?

All of these, to be a real S-T-R-E-T-C-H, will offer some resistance. This is rewarding work because we’ll have to breakthrough.

And when we breakthrough enough times, we breakout!

Thin Lizzy provide the perfect theme song for our bold and courageous quest: Jailbreak!

Prison to Praise

Prison to Praise,” is a book by Merlin Carothers that changed my whole view of life and then the course my life is taking. It put so much distance between the bars of my cage that my tiger escaped into a new realm of liberty. I thought I was free but I realise now that we become ‘heroes’ as we successively liberate our thinking and beliefs and circumstances from one degree of freedom to another. The important thing is to take action and do something today to increase the distance between some of the bars that hold you and me back.

If you’ve got some bar-bending or even bar-breaking that I could help with – ask me.

“Let’s bend some bars!” and then…

“Go get ’em, Tiger!”

…fin…

Postscript

I have a request! Most jailbreaks require help on the inside and the outside! A bar(rier) I’m facing is finding the right companies to deliver training in:

  • Mind Mapping – a bar-bending thinking technique that breaks through complexity
  • Speed Reading – redeeming your time so that you can be more productive
  • Training-trainers in Accelerated Learning – as per my book, “The Accelerated Trainer,” helping deliver content more rapidly in a way your team can remember.

Whilst I cover many more subjects (such as Social Media, Video for Business, and Presentation Skills) I want to share my joy in learning with more people in those three specific subject areas. If you know someone who would value these as an in-house programme delivering outstanding results, kindly connect me! Let’s move the bar together!

Thanks, in anticipation
